| Truck rental is the preferred method for smaller electronic items and especially for long distance moves. Items have been known to shift when using trailers or moving trucks and smaller items will be safer in the cab with the driver. If possible, pack these smaller items in their original boxes for the trip. If there are cords accompanying any of your small electronics, label them and pack them neatly in a separate box. |

You should make sure that you check out the company that you select with the Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and Department of Transportation. Ask the companies for references and then call the references. You might also want to do a search on the Internet to see if there are any reviews on the company that have been posted. You can also check with your own family or friends to see if they have a company that they have either used in the past or know one that someone else used. No matter how you obtain the names of the companies, make sure that you take time to check them out.
Insurance is another key item that you want to also check on. Ask each company what kind of insurance they have. Be sure to ask what kind of deductible it has, if any, and also for a copy so you can read it carefully. If there is a problem after they deliver the car, it is too late to be finding out what the insurance coverage is.
Now that you have selected the method of shipping and the carrier, find out what the payment terms are. Do you pay the driver or the company before the driver arrives? How much do you pay up front? Will they take personal checks? How do you pay when the vehicle is delivered?
The last thing you should do is do a complete inventory on the car before it is picked up. You want to make sure that you have noted all scratches and dents. I would recommend that you take pictures of the car also for your record. The driver will prepare a bill of lading, with the condition of the car. Make sure that it is detailed enough and that you agree with it before you sign it. Good Luck.
