First things first, you need something to put your smaller possessions in. A box is probably the thing that pops into mind, and they are very acceptable. Boxes are ideal for packing things around the house that do not require any special packing needs. If you still have the box for an item you purchased, you can also use those to pack those smaller things into as well. Of course, there are more things to use than boxes. Plastic containers are more sturdy than the average box and you can use them to store sensitive items to protect them from water or other possible hazards. Plastic containers can vary in size and capable of storing random things around the house to really small items such as nails, tacks, and other items. Tape should also be purchased to seal boxes and containers so that nothing comes out when you are transporting everything.

A marker is another good investment. You can use a marker to label the containers of small items. This allows you to know what a box will be used for when packing it and it will let you know which room a box will go in when you unpack. Labels and stationary will also need to be used for this. Some families write everything down on paper then tape the paper to the box so that they can use it as a checklist.

Breakable or delicate items should be packed with some sort of material to keep them safe. Most fragile items can be wrapped with newspaper or toilet paper and then packed into a box with soft linens or bubble wrap. Bubble wrap can also be used to keep your small electronic devices from getting static charges when you are packing those as well.
